Dog training is the process of teaching a dog to obey commands. These commands might
be as complex as the behavioral patterns of assisted living dogs for people with disabilities, or as simple as
a “come here” command to call your dog to your side, or how to train your dog to become accustomed to dog pens.
There are many methods of training, and many types of dogs can be
trained to do many different kinds of things. Some dogs, however, are more inclined to do certain tasks
better.
For example, Border Collies are very good at herding animals, and
Beagles are very good at hunting certain types of critters.
Basic training of a dog usually begins when the dog is a puppy,
and usually consists of commands like sit, down, stay, recall, close, and heel. It is said that force should never
be used to punish a dog for not following a command.
Rather, encouragement and enthusiasm should be used to help a dog to understand what
they should be doing. Dogs actually want to please their owners, and can end up depressed if they do not feel
liked or like they are doing a good job.
They want you to be pleased with them, so they usually try their
best; this is a good thing to keep in mind as you train your dog.
Some dog owners send their dogs to professional obedience
trainers. These trainers teach your dog all of the basic commands.
Since the trainer is a professional who can dedicate a certain
amount of time to working with your dog, this is often a very popular choice among dog owners who either do not
feel up to the task of training their dog, or who simply do not have the time. Professional dog trainers can be
found in almost every community, and their rates are usually pretty reasonable.
